Interviewing Clients: Understanding the Differences Between What they Ask and What They Need

There are times as geo-professionals where we find ourselves in situations where our clients ask us for one thing when the really need something completely different, where we find out after-the-fact that what we have created is not what they had in mind but they are using it anyways, or where we create a high-performance sports car solution when the client uses the windshield wipers for a one-off meeting with an executive. This presentation will serve as a guide to why these situations happen, how to avoid them and what tools are available to work through understanding and decoding what your clients really need.

Michael Davis is a container of useful knowledge with a career that has swerved from living in libraries and archives to being a journeyperson heat and frost insulator to working as a geospatial professional. He has a Masters degree in Library and Information Science (Western) and a Post-Graduate Certificate in GIS (Fanshawe). He is currently employed by the City of Peterborough as a GIS Technologist.
